live freely
Spend nothing
Give it away for free
While it’s fun to be on the road, it’s also rewarding to give back. Whether it’s a beach walk/clean-up, releasing turtles, or sitting down to help young entrepreneurs fix a website, sharing your skills can be incredibly fulfilling. As for us, we love animals and have spent a lot of time volunteering with animal rescues.
Being on the road, we’ve learned that many places need extra hands, and we’re happy to help—especially when it means supporting our furry friends. A few hours out of your day can really make a difference. PLUS, in doing so, you make new friends—often locals—and get the inside scoop on what they enjoy and how they spend their time.
On more than one occasion, we volunteered for a day and were directed to free parking nearby for an overnight stay. Whether it’s with new local friends made while volunteering, or by swapping stories with other traveling volunteers, we’ve often gained more detailed information about an area than just relying on the web.
Bottom line: If you have something you enjoy doing or are particularly skilled at, you might be able to leverage that to enhance your travel experience. Don’t be shy about investigating and putting yourself out there—you never know what might transpire.
